After the expulsion of two AfD (Alternative for Germany) politicians, Manfred Pentz, the Hessian Minister of Europe, will journey to Serbia and Croatia starting from Tuesday. CDU politician Pentz stated in a statement beforehand that "Serbia is one of Germany and Hessen's most crucial partners in the Balkans." However, on Tuesday morning, the AfD announced that its two expelled state parliamentarians had flown to Serbia independently – on the same plane.

According to Pentz, Hessen holds great interest in Serbia's continued approach to the EU. "We advocate for a strong and united Europe, and I believe that Serbia clearly deserves to be a part of it," said the Minister of Europe. "The purpose of my trip is not only to strengthen bilateral relations but also to advocate for this important approach."

The AfD labeled as securely right-wing extremist

The trip had already caused a commotion before it even started. Pentz had expelled the parliamentarians Anna Nguyen and Christian Rohde after the AfD was labeled as securely right-wing extremist. He declared that he would no longer extend invitations to AfD politicians for his official trips abroad. "I cannot ask international interlocutors to sit at the table with representatives of a securely right-wing extremist party," Pentz told the German Press Agency.

In a swift countermeasure, the AfD organized their own travel program: Its two parliamentarians aimed to "hold talks with political representatives and participate in some media appearances in both countries." AfD parliamentary group leader Robert Lambrou stated: "We are pleased that it will now be possible to represent the entire political spectrum of democracy in Hessen on this trip."

Renewed Controversy for the AfD

Recent weeks have been filled with controversy for the AfD as the party continues to divide political opinion. Their representatives in the Hessian parliament were booted out over their association with right-wing extremism. Meanwhile, Pentz seeks to strengthen diplomatic relationships with Serbia and Croatia, advocating for these important allies and a united Europe.
