Rockin' with Mozart: Bremerhaven's Summer Stage dives into the enigmatic life of Amadeus

"Mozart's Tunes on Summer Scene" - Bremerhaven's Summer Festival Features Mozart's Music

Ever wondered who the real Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was? The City Theatre Bremerhaven brings that interrogation to the forefront and delivers the play "Amadeus" under the open summer sky.

Here's the tea:

The old geezer in a wheelchair, with his unkempt grey mane, has ticked off every box: a coveted court position, fame among his peers, a presentable spouse, and a tailor-made protege he harbors secret fantasies about.

But imagine if you've slogged it out, chasing your dreams, and then someone suddenly appears, proving what's truly possible with sheer talent? That's the reality for Antonio Salieri, court composer to Emperor Joseph II, in Peter Shaffer's creation. As the sole one among all courtiers, nobles, and the supposedly music-savvy emperor, he can sense the genius of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Shaffer brings together historical figures of Salieri and Mozart, blending reality with fiction to craft a kind of fictional double biography. His drama was brought to life by Milos Forman's camera in 1984. Bremerhaven's City Theatre takes on Shaffer's text, which delves into creative liberties, as Mozart - impulsive, crude, and bursting with energy - challenges the sensibilities of the emperor and his entourage, leaving a trail of disgruntled admirers in his wake.

Faded grandeur, dusty Baroque finery

Despite his antics, Mozart miraculously churns out masterpieces from the frayed sleeves of his dusty Rococo wardrobe, making it even more irksome for Salieri. "We humans tend to believe we deserve something if we've intensely desired it," explains director Peter Hilton Fliegel.

Sure, that may not be entirely true, but that's where Salieri slips up. And that's why he's so relatable.

Confined by a mound of weathered Baroque furniture, which has aged just as it has the old man, Salieri reminisces his life. During such moments, he swaps his bald cap with its wispy strands for a well-kept white wig, instantly regaining his youth.

Historical precision and factual information aren't the main focus, explains director Wolf Widder, but more so the question: Can being a good person equate to being a good musician? Or conversely, can a good musician be considered a good person? "This play consists of numerous small episodes and scenes," says Widder.

Creating a seamless flow and crafting a narrative arc that maintains tension is an exciting challenge for a director.
