Movie Time on a Saturday Eve - 14th May 2016, 5 PM
Tonight, radio host Andrew Collins will dedicate two hours to the enchanting scores of two renowned movie composers from the golden age of cinema - Max Steiner and Dmitri Tiomkin.
Born on the same day in May, these two composers left indelible marks on the world of film music. Max Steiner, a child prodigy who conducted his first operetta at the tender age of 12, became a full-time professional at 15. Steiner's career took him from England, Broadway, and eventually to Hollywood in 1929.
Steiner is one of the first composers to write music scores for films. His contributions to cinema are vast, including the original film music for iconic films such as King Kong, Casablanca, and Gone with the Wind. While the 1976 and 2005 remakes of King Kong featured new scores by John Barry and James Newton Howard respectively, the original 1933 King Kong and the 1939 Gone with the Wind will be heard tonight.
Steiner's impressive body of work earned him 24 Oscar nominations, of which he won three. His awards include four Oscars - for High Noon, The High and the Mighty, The Old Man and the Sea, and one for Best Original Song for The Ballad of High Noon.
On the other hand, Dmitri Tiomkin, who was musically trained in Russia, is best known for his western scores. His iconic works include Duel in the Sun, Red River, High Noon, and Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Tiomkin's western scores have become synonymous with the genre, and his contributions will also be highlighted in tonight's broadcast.
Tiomkin's career spanned over 50 years, and he received 22 Academy Award nominations. While he didn't win as many Oscars as Steiner, his impact on film music is undeniable.
Tune in tonight to relive the timeless melodies of Max Steiner and Dmitri Tiomkin, two composers who shaped the landscape of film music in the golden age of cinema.
