"Movie: Thomas Mann's Buddenbrooks, set in Lübeck"
Thomas Mann Tribute at Literaturhaus Wiesbaden
Get ready to immerse yourself in the world of Thomas Mann as the Literaturhaus Wiesbaden honors the renowned German novelist on the occasion of his 150th birth anniversary. Mark your calendars for June 18!
Join us at the Literaturhaus for an exclusive screening of the captivating documentary, "Buddenbrooks. Thomas Mann and Lübeck," brought to you by ARTE. This documentary provides a richly satisfying journey through the city, the history, and, of course, the literature.
LC, the city of Lübeck, was far from silent when "Buddenbrooks" was first published in 1901. Instead, it was met with an uproar as citizens perceived themselves to be misunderstood, exposed, and ridiculed. Contrastingly, the family saga would go on to conquer the globe. Thirty years later, Thomas Mann received the Nobel Prize in Literature for his masterpiece, a work that transcends literature, capturing a family chronicle, a portrait of society, and a psychological drama[2].
Join us at the Villa Clementine, as we remember Mann's groundbreaking work alongside ARTE. The documentary "Buddenbrooks. Thomas Mann and Lübeck," directed by Hartmut Kasper and André Schäfer, offers a glimpse into 19th-century Lübeck, traces the Mann family's footsteps, and raises thought-provoking questions: How much of Thomas is in Hanno? How much of Lübeck is in Travemünde? And why does this book remain so significant and relevant today?
The cinematic adventure doesn't stop there. Caren Heuer, director of the Buddenbrook House, Volker Weidermann, literary critic, and John von Düffel, dramaturg and connoisseur of the novel, share their insights and enrich our understanding of the emotional and intellectual layers of the novel.
As the documentary explores the intricate connections between Thomas Mann's world and the real setting of Lübeck, it showcases the remarkable blending of reality and fiction in Mann's work[1]. Tune in to this intellectual voyage, and witness experts decode the novel's characters, analyze the social upheavals, and paint a vivid picture of a young author who brought the universal to the familial - and thereby, forged world literature.
To top off the night, historian and author Tilmann Lahme will read from his acclaimed biography, "Thomas Mann. A Life," at 8 PM. Following the film screening at 6:30 PM. Lahme presents Mann as a seeker, a border-crosser between bourgeoisie and art, a family man and political conscience. Join us in continuing the conversation, thinking, speaking - and reading.
Don't forget to mark your calendars!
