Movie sequel "Shrek 5" is being moved to summer 2027 for release
After multiple delays, the long-awaited fifth instalment in the Shrek franchise, simply titled Shrek 5, is now slated for release on June 30, 2027. This new date places the film squarely in the summer blockbuster season.
Directed by Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn, the film sees the return of Dohrn who was a writer and artist on the second and third Shrek films, and head of story on the fourth. Vernon, who previously directed Shrek 2, will be at the helm once more.
Gina Shay and Chris Meledandri, CEO of Illumination, return as producers for Shrek 5. The film will also feature the voices of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz reprising their roles as Shrek, Donkey, and Princess Fiona, respectively. Zendaya joins the cast as a new character.
The production schedule for Warner Bros' The Batman Part II has not been affected by the changes in the Shrek 5 and the Untitled Illumination Event Film release dates.
Originally, the Untitled Illumination Event Film was scheduled for the same date as Shrek 5's new release, but no specific release date or title for the Illumination film was provided. The Untitled Universal Event Film has been replaced by the Untitled Illumination Event Film on its new date.
The Shrek franchise, which began in 2001, has produced two Puss In Boots spin-offs. The most recent film in the franchise, Shrek Forever After, earned over $752m worldwide in 2010. Shrek 5 is expected to continue the series' success with its summer box office run.
As for Sony Pictures Animation's Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, its release date remains undetermined, making a direct comparison with Shrek 5 and the Untitled Illumination Event Film challenging.
