Movie sequel "Shrek 5" delayed until summer 2027.
In the world of animated cinema, summer 2027 is shaping up to be an exciting season, with two highly anticipated films set to make their debut. Among them is the much-anticipated fifth instalment of the beloved Shrek franchise, which has now been scheduled for a summer box office run on June 30, 2027.
Produced by DreamWorks Animation and Universal, Shrek 5 will see the return of Brad Ableson and Walt Dohrn as co-directors, Gina Shay as producer, and a stellar cast that includes the original voices of Mike Myers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona, and Conrad Vernon as various characters.
Joining Shrek 5 in the summer lineup is an Untitled Illumination Event Film, which is moving up to an April 16, 2027 release. This change comes as the release of the Untitled Illumination film has replaced an unspecified Universal event film from the June 2027 slot.
At this time, Shrek 5 seems to be the only specifically announced animated film for June 2027, with the Untitled Illumination film arriving earlier in April. It's worth noting that Warner Bros' The Batman Part II is preparing for a spring 2026 shoot in the UK, but its release date has not been confirmed yet.
The Shrek franchise first began in 2001 and has since produced two Puss In Boots spin-offs. Shrek Forever After, the most recent Shrek film, earned over $752 million worldwide in 2010, indicating a strong audience interest in the series.
As we move closer to 2027, it will be interesting to see how the animated film landscape shapes up, especially with Shrek 5 set to share the summer box office with Sony Pictures Animation's Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse. Stay tuned for more updates on these exciting releases!
