Movie Night on a Saturday - 26th September 2015
In the world of cinema, music plays a crucial role in setting the tone and enhancing the narrative. This week, our focus turns to music from biopic films, as we delve into the compositions that have brought these true-life stories to life.
Andrew Collins, our host, is leading us on this musical journey. He begins by taking us back to a classic: Maurice Jarre's score for the epic film, Lawrence of Arabia. The music, with its sweeping melodies, conjures up a vast desert landscape, perfectly capturing the film's grandeur.
However, the music for Erin Brockovich, another biopic, tells a different story. Composed by Thomas Newman, it does not set a pulsing pace like the music for the iconic film, Chariots of Fire. Instead, it focuses on a power company accused of polluting a city's water supply, mirroring the film's investigative and suspenseful nature.
Speaking of Chariots of Fire, the film's music, composed by Vangelis, is known for its fast-paced, energetic tunes, fitting perfectly with the film's athletic theme. Interestingly, the music for Mr. Turner, a biopic about the great painter, was composed by a different artist compared to Lawrence of Arabia, Chariots of Fire, and Born Free. John Barry, who composed the music for Born Free, is not the composer behind Mr. Turner's score. Instead, Gary Yershon was the man behind the Oscar-nominated score.
This exploration of music from biopic films is part of a weekly celebration of cinema's theme, which changes each week. Maureen Jackson, a resident of Bristol, suggested the idea for a show based on true life stories, and we are thrilled to be able to bring her vision to life. The show now includes music from Erin Brockovich and Mr. Turner, among others, providing a fascinating insight into the world of biopic film music.
As we continue our journey through the week, we invite you to join us as we delve deeper into the music that has shaped some of the most memorable biopic films in cinema history. Stay tuned for more!
