John Barry's Legacy Celebrated as 'Dances With Wolves' Turns 25
John Barry, the acclaimed movie music composer, passed away in 2011 at the age of 77. This month, his work is being celebrated as his iconic score for the 1990 Western film Dances With Wolves turns 25.
Barry composed the music for Dances With Wolves, a film that won the Academy Award for Best Picture. His work on the film, which also included other notable Westerns like Midnight Cowboy, showcased his versatility and talent.
Barry was not only a composer for Westerns; he was also a key figure in defining the musical style for the James Bond series. He scored eleven of the next 14 James Bond films after Dr. No, including The Golden Child. Despite this significant contribution, Monty Norman was continually credited as the composer of The James Bond Theme.
In honour of Barry's life and work, radio presenter Andrew Collins is dedicating his evening's show to the music of John Barry. Collins will be selecting tracks from Barry's work on Dances with Wolves, Out of Africa, Born Free, and various James Bond films.
