Howard Goodall Reviews the 2014 Academy Awards Nominations

The 2014 Academy Awards are upon us, and renowned music critic Howard Goodall is sharing his thoughts on this year's nominations. The list includes a diverse range of films, from Best Picture to Best Original Score.

In the Best Score category, Alexandre Desplat's music for Philomena earns its sixth Oscar nomination. Desplat, known for his work on films like The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Shape of Water, is joined by Steven Price, John Williams, Thomas Newman, and Steven Price. Each composer brings a significant number of previous nominations to the table: Steven Price with his first, John Williams boasting an impressive 49, Alexandre Desplat with six, and Thomas Newman with a remarkable 12.

Thomas Newman's music for Saving Mr Banks receives its 12th Oscar nomination, making him a strong contender in the category. Another notable nomination is Steven Price's work for Gravity, a film that left a lasting impact on audiences and critics alike.

Goodall is also discussing the directors nominated for Best Director, including Sean Baker for "Anora," Brady Corbet for "The Brutalist," James Mangold for "Like A Complete Unknown," Jacques Audiard for "Emilia Pérez," and Coralie Fargeat for "The Substance."

The nominations this year include a tribute to the late Roger Lloyd-Pack, an actor known for his role in Only Fools and Horses. Sadly, Lloyd-Pack passed away earlier this week, leaving a void in the world of British television. Goodall pays tribute to Lloyd-Pack, who was fondly known as Trigger in the beloved series.

As Goodall reflects on this year's nominations, he also looks back at previous winners of the Academy Awards. He makes suggestions for film scores that should have won in previous years, adding a unique perspective to the discussion.

In addition to his analysis of the nominations, Goodall shares his opinions on the films and the awards they should have won. His insights offer a fresh take on the upcoming awards ceremony, promising an engaging and thought-provoking review. Stay tuned for more updates on the 2014 Academy Awards!
