In the world of cinematic reboots, one highly-anticipated project is the upcoming big-screen adaptation of the iconic 1980s TV series, Miami Vice. Originally set for an August 6, 2027 release, the film has recently experienced a slight shift in its schedule.

First aired in 1984, Miami Vice ran for 111 episodes and won four Primetime Emmys. The series, known for its glamorous yet gritty portrayal of mid-80's Miami, was a cultural phenomenon that set the style of fashion and filmmaking. The new film, inspired by the pilot episode and first season, aims to continue this legacy.

Don Johnson, who originally played the role of Sonny Crockett in the TV series, is expected to reprise his role in the new adaptation. However, the main role has not been officially announced or disclosed yet. Casting for the film is currently underway with a planned production start date in 2026.

The film will be directed by Joseph Kosinski, who has previously worked on F1 and Top Gun: Maverick. Kosinski is joined by producers Dylan Clark and Joseph Kosinski in bringing this project to life. Eric Warren Singer and Dan Gilroy have written the screenplay for the new Miami Vice.

The film will be shot in Imax format and is set to continue the trend of white suit fashion from the 1980s. The characters in the film are based on those created by Anthony Yerkovich from the series.

Michael Mann, who executive produced the original series and directed the 2006 feature version, is not involved in the latest adaptation. Philip Michael Thomas, who portrayed detective Ricardo Tubbs in the TV series, is also not confirmed for the new film.

Initially scheduled for August 6, 2027, the release date for Miami Vice has been moved. The Aug. 6, 2027 date has been assigned to an Untitled DreamWorks Animation Event Film instead. However, the new release date for Miami Vice has been confirmed as Friday, Sept 24, 2027.

The new Miami Vice film is shaping up to be a summer finale action movie, similar to Universal's previous releases such as Hobbs & Shaw. The film's production is well underway, with casting nearly complete, and fans eagerly await the official announcement of the actor playing Sonny Crockett.
