Movie about weapons secures triumph at box office

In a thrilling turn of events, Zach Cregger's latest directorial venture, "Weapons," has taken the horror genre by storm. Released on August 8, 2025, the film significantly outperformed its contemporary, "Freakier Friday," at the box office.

"Weapons," a chilling blend of horror, paranoia, and existential humor, grossed an impressive $167.5 million worldwide. In the United States and Canada alone, it raked in $97.9 million by August 20, 2025[3]. The film opened with a staggering $43.5 million domestically, setting a new record for Warner Bros. as their sixth consecutive film to open over $40 million. It later crossed the $100 million domestic milestone, making it only the third horror film in 2025 to achieve this feat[2][3][5].

The second weekend saw a 43% drop, with "Weapons" adding an additional $25 million. Projections suggest that the film could reach up to $160 million domestically[1]. By contrast, "Freakier Friday," the sequel to the 2003 classic, did not register comparably in reported box office success[3].

The success of "Weapons" can be attributed to a combination of viral marketing tactics and strong social media word-of-mouth. Interestingly, "Weapons" shared a comedy-horror double premiere with "Freakier Friday."

Set in the small town of Maybrook, "Weapons" tells the story of 17 kids mysteriously leaving their homes at 2:17 a.m. The film, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, became the seventh No. 1 opening of the year for the studio.

Analyst David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research called the opening of "Weapons" outstanding for an original horror film. The film has received strong reviews, boasting a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Meanwhile, "Freakier Friday" offered a unique twist with a double body-swapping between the mother-daughter duo and Lohan's teen daughter and soon-to-be stepdaughter. Despite its promising premise, the film could not match the box office success of "Weapons."

In the realm of box office competition, "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" brought in $15.5 million domestically in its third weekend, surrendering its two-week run in the top spot and landing in the third position.

With "Weapons" topping the box office during its debut weekend, earning $42.5 million domestically and $70 million internationally, it's clear that Zach Cregger has delivered another hit. The film has proven to be a standout in the horror genre, solidifying its position as the dominant horror film for August 2023.
