Moves Nuclear Submarines Nearer to Russian Coast by Trump
In a move signalling heightened military readiness, U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered the tactical relocation of two nuclear submarines in response to provocative statements made by former Russian President and Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev.
Trump announced this move on his Truth Social platform, emphasising that the repositioning is a precaution in case Medvedev’s inflammatory remarks escalate beyond rhetoric. The exact locations of the submarines have not been specified, but the action marks an escalation in U.S. military signalling amid ongoing geopolitical tensions with Russia.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth supported and reposted Trump’s statement, underscoring the official U.S. defence posture. NBC News reported the move as being triggered by a "threat from a top Russian official," reinforcing that the U.S. sees the tactical submarine relocations as a direct countermeasure to Russian statements perceived as aggressive.
Meanwhile, in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, a drone strike injured at least eleven people, including a five-month-old infant and two children aged nine and ten. Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov described the Belgorod drone strike as a Ukrainian terrorist attack on his Telegram channel.
The U.S. Navy has both nuclear-powered submarines with and without nuclear weapons on board. The submarines will be closer to Russia, according to Trump's statement. Trump has also threatened to impose sanctions on Russia’s trading partners if no agreement is reached by the deadline.
Trump shortened his ultimatum to Russian President Vladimir Putin from 50 to 10 days, demanding a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine within that time. However, the number of victims and damages on the Russian side do not compare to the devastating destruction and the many dead and injured in Ukraine due to the ongoing Russian invasion.
It is important to note that this move comes amidst an ongoing dispute between Trump and former Russian president Dmitri Medvedev, which has been ongoing for several days. The relocation is "just in case these foolish and provocative remarks are more than just words," as stated by Trump.
