Kicking Your Way to Confidence: Marie Mouroum Champions Combat Sports in Schools

Berlin/Hamburg - If you've got the moves on RTL's dance show "Let's Dance," you might recognize her: Hollywood stuntwoman Marie Mouroum. Now, she's making waves advocating for combat sports to become a staple in school curricula across Germany.

"Why not make it a base sport in schools?" Mouroum pondered in a chat with the German Press Agency. "In many Eastern European countries, it's already like that - like we have track and field and gymnastics in sports."

Girls, in particular, could benefit from mastering a combat sport, Mouroum insisted. "Girls naturally bring less self-assurance than little boys. Combat sports could boost their self-confidence, helping them understand their strength and know they can defend themselves if necessary. It gives them an edge, not just in capability, but in walking through life."

The Power of Self-Defense

Discipline and respect are vital aspects of combat sports, according to Mouroum. "It's all about understanding your limits and knowing when and where to use your learned combat skills. These are crucial lessons that go beyond the dojo."

This Saturday (June 28), Mouroum will be at the mixed martial arts event "Oktagon 73" in Hamburg, serving as a backstage reporter for RTL+. Expect an exhilarating behind-the-scenes look as "Oktagon 73" kicks off at 5:30 PM on RTL+, featuring Germany's best-known MMA star, Christian Eckerlin, in a comeback match after an eight-month break.

From Bond Girl to Stunt Star

Marie Mouroum has been involved in the stunt world since she was 18, doubling for Queen Latifah in "The Equalizer" and Bond girl Lashana Lynch in "James Bond 007: No Time to Die." The spy film brought one of her most daring stunts: "You fly through the air from one building to another." In the scene, her character, Bond's double, is kidnapping a scientist on Cuba. The adrenaline rush was intense, Mouroum admitted. "You fall almost like in free fall. Just before hitting the ground, a rope stops you. It's a moment when you think... what if this rope breaks at the last moment?"

Struck by Misfortune

Mouroum has faced her fair share of injuries while performing death-defying stunts. "In 'The Equalizer', I destroyed my ankle and tore the ligaments in my ankle," she recounted, having jumped from a second-story balcony. The impact was meant to be cushioned by cardboard boxes designed to absorb the shock, but the cold weather left the protective materials virtually cement-like. The unintended consequence? A broken ankle and a rib contusion. Currently, she's struggling with a torn ACL.
