Mourning the Passing: Colleagues Bid Farewell to the Late Carlo von Tiedemann (age 81)
Spinning the Tales of a Legend: The Unmatched Journey of Carlo von Tiedemann, a Radio and TV Pioneer
Farewell, dear entertainer, as the 81-year-old Carlo von Tiedemann, popularly known for his wit and charm, bid adieu in a Hamburg clinic on Pentecost Sunday, leaving behind a legacy in radio and television shows that spanned over five decades.
Von Tiedemann, born on October 20, 1943, in Stargard, Pomerania, began his career at the public broadcaster Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) in 1971. His signature style - an endless stream of down-to-earth, affectionate, and earthy humor - resonated with generations, captivating them with TV shows like "Die aktuelle Schaubude," "Hamburg am Mittag," and "Große Freiheit" and numerous radio programs.
The Indestructible TV Star
Despite battling health issues and a series of setbacks, von Tiedemann stood tall, embodying resilience and determination. Having survived polio as a child and dealing with two brain tumors, the media star continued to charm audiences with his unparalleled energy and charisma.
Von Tiedemann started as a publishing sales apprentice but later ventured into journalism. His journey took him from being a police reporter for the "Abendblatt," to a correspondent for the Springer foreign service in Buenos Aires for three years. His unparalleled career at NDR began, standing alongside legends like the 84-year-old Victoria Voncampe and the 81-year-old Alida Gundlach, who was once Fischer.
The challenging times of the 80s
In the tumultuous 80s, the bearded media star faced a significant career setback. His foray into ZDF with the series "Show und Co. mit Carlo," which started in early 1984, ended abruptly in 1986. While mainstream media exploded with headlines about his controversies involving prostitutes, cocaine, and high debts, von Tiedemann, showing true grit, took responsibility for his actions and paid back his debts diligently for 12 years, focusing more on his family.
"When the term 'NDR institution' applies to anyone, it's Carlo von Tiedemann. With his casual, spontaneous, and heartfelt manner, he captivated several generations and remained one of our absolute audience favorites until the end. The NDR owes 'Carlo' a lot - his death is a heavy loss. Our condolences go out to his family," said NDR Intendant Joachim Knuth on Sunday.
NDR colleague Hinnerk Baumgarten wrote on Instagram, "You were a sensational entertainer, you were a friend to people, you were a friend, colleague, and kindred spirit... Great guy, Carlo... goodbye... I won't forget you. Your Hinnerk"
Olivia Jones also mourned on Instagram, "A great heart has stopped beating forever. We will miss you, Carlo. You, your humor, your humanity, your compassion, the wild Kiez parties, and also your thoughtful moments. For many, you were 'Mister NDR.' For us, you were one of the most generous people we had the privilege to know. Thank you for accompanying and enriching our lives for so long. Safe journey and strength to his family - from the whole Olivia Jones Family."
The deeply religious von Tiedemann also supported the Hamburg children's hospice "Sternenbrücke." He celebrated his 80th birthday in October 2023 with 300 guests in the Hamburg Kiez district of St. Pauli. Rest in peace, dear Tiedemann. (dpa/mp)
