In a solemn announcement, President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared a national mourning period following the passing of former Deputy President David Dabede Mabuza on July 3, 2025. Mabuza, aged 64, succumbed to breathing difficulties in a hospital in Gauteng.

The African National Congress (ANC) and government have expressed their deep sorrow at the loss of Mabuza, recognizing his significant contributions as a former deputy president and provincial premier. President Ramaphosa praised Mabuza's lifelong service to the country, emphasizing his leadership roles and activism.

In accordance with national mourning protocols, the national flag will be flown at half-mast at all flag stations around the country from Monday until Saturday evening. This period of official mourning is expected to see government and political activities scaled down.
