Honoring a Century-Long HSV Devotee

When Oscar Algner, a sprightly centenarian, celebrated his birthday in March, the club's CFO Dr. Eric Huwer (40) and Vice-President Bernd Wehmeyer (71) extended their warmest congratulations. Algner had a distinguished history with HSV, joining the club in 1930 at the tender age of 20 and remaining a loyal member until his recent passing. With an impressive 93-year tenure, Algner held the title of the club's longest-serving member (see Figure 1).

Oscar Algner's fascination with HSV began at the tender age of five, as he attended his inaugural match at the Rothenbaum stadium in 1928 (see Figure 2). He continued to be an avid spectator, gracing the Volksparkstadion until his advanced years. In August 2023, his great-grandson, Philipp, made a legendary run-in during a Second Bundesliga match against Hertha BSC, carrying on Oscar's enduring wish for HSV's promotion to the Bundesliga.

The Algner family boasts an impressive lineage of HSV loyalists. Oscar's father "Oschi" became a member of the Falke soccer club in 1908, which eventually merged to establish HSV. Oschi then assumed a position on the club's board, laying the groundwork for Oscar's unwavering devotion to the team (see Figure 3).

Oscar once stated: "HSV is the club that belongs to my family. My father was a founding member of HSV, so I had a genetic predisposition-whether I wanted to or not..."

Amidst the Hamburg soccer scene, local sports platform regio sport hamburg reported on the widespread mourning of Oscar Algner. His family's storied relationship with HSV transcended generations, highlighting the essential role that supporting local soccer teams plays in Hamburg's cultural identity (see Figure 4).
