Mourners gather to say goodbye to Senator and presidential hopeful Miguel Uribe as his chapel goes up in flames
Senator Miguel Uribe, a presidential hopeful, passed away on Monday following an attack during a campaign event in Fontibón, on the outskirts of Bogotá. The wake for the late senator is currently being held in the Elíptico Hall of Congress and will remain open until Wednesday.
The Colombian Prosecutor's Office is actively investigating the case, with at least ten individuals confirmed to have been involved in the preparation and execution of the attack. As of the latest information, a minor has been arrested and is being considered the last link in a wider plot. The authorities are continuing their efforts to identify and prosecute all those responsible for the crime.
President Gustavo Petro has expressed his condolences to Senator Uribe's family and the Colombian population, stating that "life is above any ideology" and expressing regret that the tragic attack occurred during his term.
Senator Uribe was seriously injured, having been shot twice in the head and once in the leg during the attack. He was subsequently hospitalized but unfortunately did not recover.
A tribute to family members and congressmen is scheduled before Senator Uribe's funeral, which will take place on Wednesday at the Primatial Cathedral of Colombia. Citizens have been visiting the wake in groups of 15 since 10:00 am local time.
It is important to note that no information about the "sustainable financing of a highway corridor in Colombia for 780 million" or the "deadly attack by Israel against journalists in Gaza" is directly related to the death of Senator Miguel Uribe.
As the investigation continues, the Colombian people await answers and justice for this senseless act of violence. Our thoughts remain with Senator Uribe's family and loved ones during this difficult time.
