Mourinho's comeback as Benfica's coach is flawless, according to reports

In a momentous return to Portuguese football, José Mourinho has taken the helm at Benfica Lisbon following the departure of Bruno Lage, who parted ways with the club after a humiliating 2-3 defeat in the Champions League against FK Karabakh Agdam.

The former coach of Benfica, Roger Schmidt, was dismissed after the same defeat, paving the way for Mourinho's return. This marks Mourinho's first coaching role in Portugal since 2000, when he briefly coached Benfica following Jupp Heynckes' departure.

Mourinho, who most recently worked for Fenerbahçe Istanbul, has now signed a contract with Benfica until the summer of 2027. The contract signing took place on Wednesday evening, and the Turks recently released Mourinho from Fenerbahçe, allowing him to take up this new challenge.

Mourinho expressed his excitement about returning to Benfica, stating, "I am extremely happy to be here." He also emphasized his commitment to the club, saying, "Retirement is not on the agenda yet."

The Portuguese manager, known for his fiery passion and tactical acumen, also expressed feeling a great responsibility. He stated, "I have a greater hunger than I had 25 years ago." Mourinho's ambition is clear: to help Benfica win new titles and potentially lead the club to their first championship since 2023.

In a show of confidence, Mourinho also stated, "And I feel more alive than ever." These words echo the determination and drive that have defined his career, and fans can expect nothing less from the charismatic coach as he embarks on this new chapter at Benfica Lisbon.

The departure of Lage from Benfica occurred in the early hours of the following night after the Champions League defeat. The club has now announced the signing of Mourinho, signalling a new era for the Portuguese giants. As Mourinho settles into his new role, the anticipation among fans is palpable, with hopes running high for a successful and title-winning season.
