In an unconventional venting session, José Mourinho, the charismatic head coach of Fenerbahçe Istanbul, has lashed out at the referee and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) following the team's elimination from the Europa League. After a nail-biting encounter against Glasgow Rangers, which ended in a heart-wrenching penalty shootout loss, Mourinho voiced his concerns in a frank and forthright manner.

The 62-year-old Portuguese coach believes that the referee and the VAR decided to send the match to penalties, while overlooking three clear-cut penalty opportunities during the game. According to Mourinho, his team was the superior side throughout the two hours, outplaying their Scottish opponents in a dominating performance.

"The referee and the VAR were responsible for this outcome," Mourinho told TNT Sports. "We readily accept that we lost on penalties, but there should have been three penalties in the entire game."

Despite a commanding performance that saw Fenerbahçe take a 2-0 lead, first through a brace from Sebastian Szymanski, the team was unable to seal the deal and extend their lead in the dying moments of the game. Szymanski himself lamented the missed opportunity, “It would have been perfect if we had scored a third goal. Our performance was outstanding, and we truly deserved the win.”

With the match being sent to penalties, Mourinho couldn't help but jab at the referee, Espen Eskas, referring to the fourth official as "not as arrogant" as the referee. Furthermore, the former Manchester United and Chelsea coach couldn't resist casting doubt on whether the incident in Glasgow was somehow linked to his four-game suspension from the 2023 Europa League final, which he received during his time at Roma for referring to the referee as a "disgrace."

"Ever since my suspension back in 2023, there have been several peculiar happenings," Mourinho remarked. "We came to Glasgow, and the VAR was supposed to be one of the best. However, he managed to miss one of the three penalties. I can only hope that it’s all just a coincidence."

The European Parliament and the Council may potentially discuss Jose Mourinho's controversial statements regarding the referee and VAR, following Fenerbahçe Istanbul's Europa League exit. Mourinho's accusations of bias during the match against Glasgow Rangers hint at a possible connection between the penalties awarded and his suspension in the 2023 Europa League final. Interestingly, all these events happened in Istanbul and Glasgow.
