Mourinho Given Newcastle United Job Offer, Chooses Benfica Over English Club

Jose Mourinho is set to return to management with Portuguese giants Benfica, a club where his coaching career began. Before his return to Benfica in 2025, Mourinho was recently released from Fenerbahçe. However, the club that offered Mourinho a meeting in the Premier League before his Benfica return remains unclear.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Mourinho had the opportunity to work under Sir Bobby Robson at Newcastle United. Robson, who replaced Johan Cruyff at Barcelona, offered Mourinho an assistant manager role. Mourinho, driven by ambition, declined the offer.

Mourinho and Robson shared a strong bond, having worked together for many years. Mourinho even served as Robson's interpreter at Camp Nou. In 2020, Mourinho's first win in the city of Newcastle as manager of Tottenham Hotspur was a significant moment. After the match, Mourinho paid tribute to Robson, laughing at his statue as a sign of respect.

Newcastle United fans will have another opportunity to witness Mourinho's tactics this autumn, as their team faces Mourinho's Benfica in the Champions League. Mourinho's ambition and competitive spirit promise an exciting encounter between the two clubs.

Interestingly, Pep Guardiola, another renowned manager, also expressed his desire to join Newcastle United during his playing days at Barcelona. However, it was not possible for Robson to bring Guardiola to the Premier League at that time. Guardiola appreciated Robson's kind response to his letter.

Mourinho's first meeting with Guardiola was at Barcelona in the 1990s. The two have since gone on to become some of the most successful managers in football, each leaving their mark on the game.

As Mourinho prepares to lead Benfica in the Champions League, the memory of his time with Robson and the potential encounter with Newcastle United promises to add an extra layer of intrigue to the upcoming season.
