Mourinho announced his statements following Benfica's disappointing Champions League match against Karabakh

José Mourinho, the renowned football manager, is in advanced discussions with Benfica to take over as the club's coach, following the dismissal of Bruno Lage. According to reports, the Portuguese club aims to conclude negotiations with Mourinho by Wednesday, with a view to having him on the bench as early as Saturday for the 5th league match against AVS.

Mourinho's return to Benfica marks a significant moment in his career, as he previously managed the club at the start of the 21st century. However, his tenure was cut short in December 2000 after just 9 matches, following the non-re-election of the club's president.

Since his departure from Benfica, Mourinho has had a successful career, coaching UD Leiria, FC Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Chelsea again, Manchester United, Tottenham, AS Roma, and most recently, Fenerbahçe Istanbul. Unfortunately, his time at Fenerbahçe was short-lived, as he was fired at the end of August.

In his brief spell at Benfica this time around, Mourinho has had a mixed record, with 6 wins, 3 draws, and 2 defeats. However, his most recent result, a 2-3 loss to Karabagh in the opening game of the Champions League, will be a concern for the club's fans. The loss occurred after Benfica was leading 2-0 after 16 minutes, a lead they were unable to hold onto.

Benfica's president, Rui Costa, has not provided further details about the potential new coach, stating only that he is aiming to have a new coach on the bench as early as Saturday. This swift action suggests a sense of urgency from the club, as they look to turn their fortunes around and challenge for honours this season.

As the negotiations continue, fans and pundits alike will be eagerly awaiting news of Mourinho's appointment. With his extensive experience and proven track record, he could be the man to lead Benfica back to the top of Portuguese football. Only time will tell if he can deliver the success that the club's supporters crave.
