Mountaineering mishap claims life of German Olympic victor
Tragedy on Laila Peak: German Mountaineer Laura Dahlmeier Dies in Climbing Accident
In a heartbreaking incident, renowned German mountaineer and former biathlon champion Laura Dahlmeier lost her life in a fatal accident on July 28, 2025, while ascending Laila Peak in the Karakoram range, Pakistan.
Dahlmeier, who was just 25 years old, was struck by falling rocks at an altitude of approximately 5,700 meters (around 18,700 feet). Her climbing partner, Marina Eva, survived and issued a distress call. However, due to the dangerous terrain, continuous rockfall, and bad weather, rescue teams could not retrieve Dahlmeier's body. Her death was confirmed in a statement issued on Wednesday.
The accident occurred around noon local time. Dahlmeier’s partner attempted rescue for several hours but had to abandon the effort due to the hazardous conditions. Despite a helicopter rescue mission the next day, poor visibility and ongoing rockfall prevented safe recovery.
Laura Dahlmeier was a celebrated Olympic biathlon gold medalist who ended her sports career in 2019 to pursue mountaineering. She had been a certified mountain and ski guide since 2023. Prior to the accident, she had already ascended the Great Trango Tower in the region.
Dahlmeier's death has left the world of sports and mountaineering in shock. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier issued a statement mourning Dahlmeier, calling her an ambassador for the country and a role model for peaceful, joyful, and fair coexistence across borders.
The local official in Ghanche district confirmed that the conditions at the altitude where Dahlmeier was climbing are extremely challenging. The region has experienced harsh weather conditions for the past week, with rain, strong winds, and thick clouds.
Rescue efforts to recover Dahlmeier were declared impossible due to the dangerous nature of the site. Authorities and family thanked rescuers and climbers who assisted in the effort, emphasizing the need to respect Dahlmeier’s wish to remain on the mountain, reflecting her deep connection to mountaineering and acceptance of the risks involved.
Dahlmeier won seven world championship gold medals and became the first female biathlete to win both the sprint and the pursuit at the same Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang in 2018. After retirement, she became a commentator on biathlon events for German broadcaster ZDF and took up mountaineering.
Our thoughts are with Dahlmeier's family, friends, and the entire mountaineering community during this difficult time.
