Mountaineer Kai Mosbacher goes missing in the Carinthian Alps range
In the heart of the Austrian Alps, the search for renowned extreme mountaineer Kai Mosbacher, known as the 'Steppenwolf', has entered its fifth day. The 62-year-old German native, who is 1.90 meters tall with long brown hair, was last seen on Monday, September 8, 2025, around 5 p.m. near the Schwarzkopf (3174 meters) in the district of Spittal an der Drau, Carinthia.
Mosbacher, a member of the German Alpine Club (DAV), left from the Hannoverhaus hut heading towards the Ali-Lanti-Biwak on Saturday, September 13, 2025. However, the exact route he took remains unknown. According to a mountain rescuer, Mosbacher's entry in the hut book of the Hannoverhaus suggests he was heading in that direction.
The search for Mosbacher began on the same day with the involvement of mountain rescue services and the Alpine police. The search has since expanded to areas in Carinthia, Salzburg, and several glaciers by air. Unfortunately, the search has so far been unsuccessful.
Mosbacher is a distinctive figure, known for his avoidance of crowds and loud noises due to having Asperger's syndrome. He often spends the night in tents or winter shelters and declines a safety line, a choice that has characterised his daring mountaineering career.
An acquaintance of Mosbacher sent a selfie from the summit to him but has not made contact since. The acquaintance believes Mosbacher might be in an area with poor network reception. Despite freezing temperatures and potential deep crevasses, the acquaintance has not given up hope.
District Inspector Werner Pucher of the Klagenfurt Provincial Police Directorate has suspended the search until new information is received. The area towards Ali-Lanti-Biwak should be approached with caution due to potential crevasses and the need for alpine experience.
As the search continues, the mountaineering community and friends of Mosbacher are keeping a close watch, hoping for a positive outcome. The story of Kai Mosbacher, the 'Steppenwolf', remains a testament to the spirit of adventure and the unpredictability of the mountains.
