Mountain Skier Laura Dahlmeier Suffers Major Injuries in a Fall

In a heartbreaking turn of events, German former biathlete Laura Dahlmeier lost her life during a climbing accident on Laila Peak in northern Pakistan. The incident occurred on July 28, 2025, at approximately 5,700 meters (18,700 feet) in altitude, where snow was present.

Dahlmeier, 31, was climbing with her partner, Marina Eva, when a rockfall struck her. The reason for the rockfall catching Dahlmeier off guard is currently unclear. Immediately after the distress signal from Eva, who descended safely with help, a rescue operation was launched.

The rescue mission faced numerous challenges due to difficult access and bad weather conditions, which led to low visibility and hindered helicopter rescue efforts. Ground teams, comprising local mountaineers and international climbers, attempted to reach Dahlmeier. However, the harsh weather conditions continued to pose a significant challenge to the retrieval efforts.

By July 30, officials and Dahlmeier's management team confirmed her death, likely instantaneous, based on observations from a helicopter and testimony from her partner, Eva. The focus of the operation shifted to recovering her remains from the remote, high-altitude location. The rescue team included international climbers such as German Thomas Huber, Americans Tad McCrea, and Jon Griffin.

Laura Dahlmeier was born in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and was a state-certified mountain and ski guide. She was considered very experienced in mountaineering, with early mountaineering experience, and was an active member of the mountain rescue service.

This summer has been extremely hot and dry in the Karakorum, leading to reports of rockfall on major mountains like the Nanga Parbat, K2, and the 8000ers, making "normal" expeditions impossible, according to journalist and extreme mountaineer Stephan Nestler.

Dahlmeier spent her second night after the accident enduring icy cold temperatures, but unfortunately, no signs of life have been detected since the accident. The rescue operation continues, with temperatures dropping to as low as minus eight degrees Celsius overnight.

The management of Dahlmeier has asked for privacy and requested that the public refrain from further questions. Our thoughts and condolences go out to her family, friends, and fans during this difficult time.
