Ethan Chapin's Family Chooses to Grieve in Private During Kohberger's Sentencing

Ethan Chapin's family, including his mother Stacy Chapin, chose not to attend the sentencing of Bryan Kohberger, the man convicted of murdering Ethan and three other university students in Moscow, Idaho, in November 2022.

In an emotional Instagram post on July 31, 2023, Stacy Chapin paid tribute to her son, expressing her love, missed, and promise to continue honoring Ethan's legacy. She thanked various entities, including the Moscow Police Department, Idaho State Police, FBI, prosecutors, University of Idaho staff, media, and her extended family, friends, and community for their contributions and support during the difficult time.

Stacy also thanked "All of the kids!! Close friends of the triplets, Greek family, and others who were part of this story from the very beginning," which includes Ethan's siblings, Hunter and Maizie. The Instagram post featured a carousel of family photos with Ethan.

Ethan Chapin, a 20-year-old college student, was one of four victims in the tragic case. Maddie Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, and Xana Kernodle were the other three victims. Kohberger first stabbed roommates Maddie Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves to death before encountering Xana Kernodle. After a struggle, Kohberger killed Xana.

On July 23, 2023, Kohberger was sentenced to four consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. While the families of the other victims spoke out during the hearing, some even expressing anger or forgiveness, Ethan Chapin's family remained absent, making a deliberate choice not to participate publicly at that moment.

Stacy Chapin stated that she does not see the purpose of attending any hearings related to the case. She expressed her admiration for the strength of all those affected by the tragedy, including her children.

Ethan Chapin was described as the glue that held the family together. Prior to his death, he attended a formal with his sister Maizie. The four-part docuseries One Night in Idaho: The College Murders was released earlier this month, shedding light on the tragic events that unfolded that fateful night. Ethan Chapin was found dead in bed after being fatally stabbed at 1122 King Road.
