Most Ardent NHL Fan Bases Exhibiting Frostiest Loyalty
In the thrilling world of ice hockey, the passion of fans is a significant contributing factor to the electric atmosphere that pervades arenas during games. A recent study has provided insights into the aggression levels and sportsmanship of National Hockey League (NHL) fan bases, shedding light on the dynamics that shape the fan culture across the league.
The Chicago Blackhawks' fanbase, known for its unwavering support, has been identified as the most aggressive in the NHL, scoring 96.9 out of 100. The study, which analysed fan engagement, loyalty, conduct, and community involvement, found that the average age of respondents was 40.5 years old, with 65.7% male, 33.5% female, 0.5% transgender, and 0.3% other participants.
Interestingly, 46% of Chicago Blackhawks fans feel no regrets about their past unsportsmanlike behaviour, while 22.2% have confessed to getting into physical altercations with the opposing fan base. However, it's worth noting that 42% of fans empathize with other teams' losses, indicating a complex mix of emotions within the fanbase.
The West Conference appears to have more aggressive hockey fans compared to the East Coast, with the Colorado Avalanche fans coming in second place with a score of 94. The New York Rangers fan base follows closely behind the Chicago Blackhawks, ranking as the third most aggressive with a total score of 82.8.
The Central Division has the most aggressive fans out of the four NHL divisions, with a score of 30.8%. The Pacific Division, on the other hand, boasts the kindest fans, with only 20.7% aggressive fans. The Atlantic Division and the Metropolitan Division follow the Central Division, with the Atlantic Division having the third most aggressive fans, scoring 21.4%.
The study also revealed that the average NHL fan rates their fan base's sportsmanship levels at 3.6 on a scale of 1 (poor) to 5 (excellent). On average, fans boo 2.7 times on a scale of 1 (never) to 5 (always).
One surprising finding was that only 19.2% of fans go out of their way to trash-talk their rivalries on social media. Conversely, 83.6% of fans admit they don't feel any remorse for their past poor interactions with other fans.
Despite the competitive nature of NHL fandom, there are glimmers of kindness. For instance, the Montreal Canadiens have the least aggressive fans among Canadian NHL teams. The Ottawa Senators, with a low aggression score of 5.5/100, have the least aggressive fans in the entire league.
As the study highlights, evaluating fan bases involves considering factors such as fan engagement, loyalty, conduct, and community involvement. However, without specific data from a nationwide survey or weighted index scores, definitive rankings of NHL fan bases by aggression and kindness remain elusive. Such information would typically require specialized research or surveys focused on fan behaviour and perceptions.
