A Blatant Act of Muslim Hate

A hair-raising incident took place in Villeurbanne, a suburb of Lyon, France, leaving the Muslim community in shock. In the wee hours of Sunday to Monday, as the city was peacefully sleeping, an audacious man ventured into a mosque, stealing a Quran, desecrating it by setting it ablaze, and then callously abandoning it outside the mosque before skulking away[1].

Authorities apprehended the perpetrator of this heinous act on Tuesday evening and remanded him in custody[4]. Although the suspect's identity is yet to be publicly disclosed, it has been indicated that he presents psychological vulnerabilities[1].

"Abhorrent Sacrilege"

"This vile act, of unparalleled hostility against the Muslim community, occurs in a climate already marred by violence against our community," a statement from the Errahma mosque proclaimed on their website. Consequently, they filed a formal complaint against the assailant[2].

The Socialist mayor of Villeurbanne, Cédric Van Styvendael, unequivocally condemned this Islamophobic act and vowed his unwavering solidarity to the mosque's congregation on the Bluesky social network[2]. Calling it an "abhorrent sacrilege" and a "serious assault on the dignity of the faithful and the fundamental principles of our republic," the Rhône Mosque Council (CMR) demanded that authorities leave no stone unturned to discover the perpetrator and bring them to swift and severe justice[2].
