Moscow's fountains undergo spring revival ahead of late April relaunch
Moscow has started its annual spring clean of public fountains ahead of the new season. Crews began work on March 31 in the Aquarium Garden, with further maintenance planned across the city. The preparations include deep cleaning, technical checks, and decorative lighting tests before the fountains restart in late April.
The first phase of cleaning took place in the Aquarium Garden, where a team of three workers used high-pressure equipment and a street-washing truck. They scrubbed the fountains with brushes and detergent to remove winter grime. One fountain features a classical design with a granite basin and three cast-iron bowls, while the other has an elliptical shape with water jets forming a circular pattern at its centre. Both are fitted with decorative lighting.
Work has also begun on fountains in Pushkin Square and Novopushkinsky Garden. Before reactivation, city services will inspect underground drainage, hydraulics, and pump systems. The goal is to ensure everything functions smoothly when the fountains return to operation. By the end of April, crews aim to restore over 2,000 public spaces, including all major fountains. The seasonal restart is scheduled for late April, once all maintenance is complete.
The cleaning and technical checks will help ensure the fountains operate safely and efficiently. Once reopened, they will add to the city's public spaces, which are being refreshed ahead of warmer weather. The work follows a set schedule, with all preparations expected to finish by the end of the month.
