Moscow’s December Warmth Defies Winter with Unseasonable Highs

Moscow is set for an unusually mild start to winter from December 2 to 5. Temperatures will stay well above freezing, defying typical early December conditions. The warm spell comes as a rare surge of Atlantic air moves in from Western Europe.

Nighttime lows in the city will range from –2°C to 0°C (28°F to 32°F). Daytime highs are forecast to reach between 0°C and +4°C (32°F to 39°F). These readings sit far above seasonal averages for early December.

Winds will begin from the south and southwest overnight, blowing at 3–8 m/s. By day, they will ease into light breezes. Atmospheric pressure will also remain unusually high, holding steady near 758 mmHg.

Nearby areas in the Moscow region will see slightly cooler weather. Nighttime temperatures there will drop to between –4°C and +1°C (25°F to 34°F). Daytime highs will stay between –2°C and +3°C (28°F to 37°F). The mild pattern is expected to last for several days, with calm winds persisting throughout.

The unseasonable warmth stems from a temporary flow of mild Atlantic air into Russia. Residents can expect a brief respite from typical winter cold. Forecasters confirm the conditions will hold until at least December 5.
