In the past 24 hours, there have been seven clashes in the town of Chasiv Yar, according to a report from Ukraine's Army General Staff. This town, located in eastern Ukraine, has been a site of battle between Russian and Ukrainian troops for nearly 18 months. The city's fate remains uncertain, as Russia claims to have seized it, but Ukraine disputes this claim [1][2].

Simultaneously, Kyiv has suffered deadly and intense Russian missile and drone attacks. On July 31, these attacks resulted in at least 13 deaths, including a 6-year-old boy, and wounded 132 others. The largest attack occurred in early August, killing at least 28 people, including three children, with over 150 injured [2][4]. A large part of a nine-story residential building collapsed in the attack.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of new demonstrative killings and called on Ukraine's allies to follow through on defense commitments and pressure Moscow toward real negotiations. He wrote on Telegram that the attacks targeted several regions, with Ukraine's capital being the primary target [3].

Meanwhile, peace talks remain stalled, with Russian President Putin attributing delays to Ukraine’s position [3][5]. The U.S. President Donald Trump has given Russian President Vladimir Putin a shorter deadline - Aug. 8 - for peace efforts to make progress, or Washington will impose punitive sanctions and tariffs.

Amid these complex political and military dynamics, Russian troops have been advancing towards Chasiv Yar, progressing about 11 kilometers since May 2023 from Bakhmut. The map attached to the report shows most of the town as being under Russian control, but this claim is disputed by Ukrainian military spokesperson Victor Trehubov [1].

Elsewhere in Ukraine, Ukrainian forces continue to counterattack in other eastern areas such as Zaporizhia Oblast and near Lyman, with Russian advances limited to certain localities [1].

In a separate incident, a drone attack caused a fire at an industrial site in Russia's Penza region, but there were no reported casualties. Some trains were also halted in the Volgograd region due to drone wreckage falling on local railway infrastructure [3].

The situation remains fluid and tense, with both sides continuing to engage in conflict. The international community is closely monitoring the situation and calling for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

Politics and general news continue to be dominated by the ongoing war-and-conflicts in Ukraine, as Russian troops advance towards Chasiv Yar, a site of battle for nearly 18 months. As peace talks remain stalled, political dynamics between Ukraine, Russia, and international allies persist.
