Moscow's air raids: "Kiev weeps with sorrow in her heart"

In the heart of Ukraine, the capital city of Kyiv is currently enduring relentless air raids from Russian forces. Over the past few days, the city has been hit by a total of 26 attacks, with 5 from rockets and 21 from drones, primarily in the Kiev region.

The latest air raid alarm in Kyiv was triggered by a Russian drone flying towards the city centre from the east. The drone, reportedly of Iranian origin, was said to have been destroyed by air defense. In quick succession, a dozen explosions shook the city, causing car alarms in an inner courtyard near the metro to blare due to the intense shockwaves.

Despite the ongoing threats, life in Kyiv continues. A delivery man bravely prepared the displays for the kiosk's morning opening, while another arrived with fresh baked goods during the air raid alarm. Even the city's iconic guitarist played the city anthem, "How could you not love you, my Kiev," for passers-by at the Golden Gate.

The city's residents have become accustomed to seeking shelter during air raid alerts. Natalija, a kiosk saleswoman, huddles in blankets in her hallway during these times, returning to her apartment only because of her cats. Inna, a hairdresser from the Darnyzja district, watches volleys rise into the air during nightly air raids.

The city's residents are preparing for nightly air raids by seeking shelter in the "Golden Gate" metro station. Few nights in Kyiv pass without an air raid alert. Despite the heavy casualties and widespread destruction, the city remains resilient, with Ukrainian air defense systems actively engaging incoming threats.

Ukraine has been pleading for and receiving enhanced Western air defense support, including imminent deliveries of German Patriot missile systems. Ukrainian forces claim to systematically improve their drones and strike capabilities to evade Russian air defenses, which are reportedly becoming increasingly depleted.

The city's air defense is being breached more frequently, but the Russian military has been using more drones than ever before this year. After almost 40 minutes, this air raid alarm was also over, marking another day in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. The situation remains volatile, with both sides actively engaged in aerial combat and strategic strikes.
