The Moscow region is preparing for a significant drop in temperatures, as the first working week of January 2025 approaches. According to weather forecasts, nighttime temperatures will plunge to as low as -6°C starting from the 5th of January, with the coldest night on the 7th predicted to reach -11°C.

The chilly trend begins earlier, with temperatures on the night of the 4th expected to drop to -9°C. This cold snap is expected to continue until the 9th, when temperatures will begin to recover. However, daytime temperatures on the 9th will still range from -4°C to -9°C.

The current weather in Moscow is surprisingly mild, resembling late October or early November. But by the evening of December 31st, temperatures will drop to between -2°C and -4°C. Snowfall is expected to start in Moscow on New Year's Eve, and it will continue throughout the holidays.

Over the course of 3-4 days, snow levels will increase by 10-15 cm. By the 3rd of January, the region will start to cool down, and wet snow will give way to regular snow.

Famous meteorologist Vilfand predicts a touch of magic on New Year's Eve in Moscow, but by the first day of 2025, he anticipates a thaw. The extreme cold wave, with temperatures dropping to -20°C, is not a specific prediction for the beginning of the week in January 2025, but rather part of the general forecasts for winter 2025/26, which indicate mostly mild conditions with occasional cold spells.

Despite the mild conditions leading up to the New Year, it seems that the real Russian winter is indeed on its way. So, bundle up and enjoy the festive season, as Moscow braces for a touch of winter magic and a cold snap that could last until early January.
