Moscow Region Braces for Another Week of Freezing Weather and Snow
The Moscow region is grappling with persistent winter conditions following January's record-breaking snowfall and freezing weather. The 'Frances' storm dumped over 65 cm of snow on January 9—the heaviest in at least 56 years, possibly even 146. Now, as February begins, forecasts indicate little change in the near term, with icy roads and chilly winds dominating the week ahead.
Temperatures on Sunday, February 8, will plummet to between -14°C and -16°C at night, with daytime highs barely reaching -9°C to -11°C. The following night, lows will dip further, from -14°C to -19°C, while afternoons remain bitter at -9°C to -14°C. Cloudy skies will dominate most of the week, though brief clear spells may appear.
Light snow is expected on Tuesday, February 10, before returning on the afternoon of February 11 and continuing through February 12. Winds will start from the northwest at 5–10 m/s, easing later in the week as they shift to the south and southwest, dropping to 3–8 m/s. Atmospheric pressure will hold steady around 745 mmHg until the weekend, when it falls to 736 mmHg.
Despite the cold, signs of a thaw are emerging. Mid-February should see temperatures creep toward freezing, with occasional readings just above 0°C. However, icy conditions will persist, and no major weather shifts are forecast for the coming days.
The region remains locked in winter's grip, with freezing nights, scattered snow, and slippery surfaces throughout the week. While a gradual warm-up is on the horizon, near-term forecasts show little relief from the cold and ice.
