Musk and Trump's Feud: Moscow Steps In with a Joke
Moscow extends asylum invitation to Elon Musk amidst escalating differences with Trump administration
Elon Musk finds himself embroiled in a public spat with U.S. President Donald Trump, and Russia's response? A mocking offer of help. The Russian government has openly hinted at granting Musk political asylum as tensions between the Tesla CEO and the Commander-in-Chief escalate.
Dmitri Novikov, deputy chairman of the international affairs committee of the State Duma, threw his hat in the ring, suggesting that Moscow is more than capable of offering political asylum to Musk. However, it's Musk who appears to think he doesn't need it. "I believe Musk is playing a completely different game," Novikov told state news agency TASS.
Russian presidential spokesman Dmitri Peskov was quick to clarify that Moscow had no intention of interfering in the U.S.-Musk drama. "This is an internal matter of the United States. We will not interfere in any way or take a stance," Peskov said at a press conference. Nonetheless, the notion of Musk finding refuge in Russia is a tantalizing possibility.
Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev added fuel to the fire by playfully offering to mediate peace talks between Trump and Musk, jokingly requesting Starlink stock in return. It's important to note that Medvedev, a frequent user of anti-Western rhetoric, has a reputation for his robust rhetoric.
The impasse between Trump and Musk started when the tech mogul publicly criticized the "Big Beautiful Bill" proposed by the Trump administration. Musk dubbed it an "ugly monstrosity," a statement that further exasperated already strained relations. A dialogue to smooth things over seemed unlikely as Trump reportedly refused to engage in a clarifying talk.
As Musk was a key figure in Trump's election campaign, a shift in Musk's stance toward Russian narratives is not surprising. Musk's criticism of U.S. military aid to Ukraine, and his unfounded claims about Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky's support, reflect an echoing of Russian narratives. Consequently, Russian officials and propagandists now view Musk as a sympathetic figure.
Ultimately, tensions between Musk and Trump are sharply on display, with Russia eager to kickstart a diplomatic dance by offering an amusing and unexpected olive branch to the depressed tech tycoon.
