Moscow braces for freezing weekend before midweek thaw arrives

Moscow is preparing for a cold friday as snow and freezing temperatures sweep across the city. Light snowfall began on friday evening, with forecasts predicting a chilly spell before a midweek warming trend arrives.

Snow started falling in Moscow on friday evening, leaving a thin layer of 3-4 centimetres by the weekend. However, meteorologists note that a stable snowpack would need at least 10 centimetres of accumulation.

Daytime highs over the weekend will hover between -4°C and -6°C. Nights will be even colder, with temperatures dropping to -8°C to -10°C on Sunday and Monday. Some areas may see lows of -13°C.

A shift is coming on Tuesday when an Atlantic cyclone brings milder air. Temperatures will climb to -2°C by Tuesday and approach 0°C by Wednesday. The thaw is then expected to continue until at least mid-December.

The weekend will bring bitter cold and light snow, but relief is on the way. By midweek, a warming trend will set in, easing the freeze for at least the next two weeks. Residents should prepare for sharp temperature swings in the coming days.
