Moscow braces for blizzards, plummeting temps in mid-December freeze

Moscow and the surrounding region will face a sharp shift in weather starting on December 12. A mix of rain and snow is forecast throughout the day, with blizzard conditions in some areas. Strong winds and plunging temperatures will follow by evening.

Daytime temperatures on December 12 will reach between 3°C and 5°C in the city, climbing slightly higher in the wider region. But by evening, a cold snap will push readings down to –1°C. Wind gusts of up to 17 m/s are also expected.

Overnight into December 13, patchy light snow may continue under cloudy skies. Temperatures will drop further, settling between –5°C and –7°C in Moscow and as low as –9°C in the suburbs.

December 13 will bring even colder conditions, with highs of –5°C in the capital and –7°C in outlying areas. Strong winds will persist, with gusts again reaching 17 m/s in places.

By the night of December 14, skies will partially clear, and mostly dry weather is forecast. However, temperatures will tumble to around –10°C across the region. Daytime readings on December 14 are then expected to range from –8°C to –3°C.

The forecast shows a rapid transition from mild, wet conditions to freezing temperatures within days. Residents should prepare for icy winds, snow, and a significant drop in mercury by mid-December. The coldest night is predicted for December 14, with lows near –10°C.
