Moscow Art Theatre Honours Mentorship and Artistic Excellence at Inaugural MXAT Prize

The Moscow Art Theatre (MXAT) held its annual MXAT Prize ceremony on March 26, 2023, celebrating achievements in ballet, opera, theatre, film, literature, and music. The event, launched in 2023 to mark the theatre's 125th anniversary, honoured artists and educators, with a strong focus on mentorship.

Konstantin Khabensky, who became MXAT's director in 2021, played a key role in the evening's proceedings by presenting awards and announcing his new position as head of the MXAT School-Studio. The ceremony opened with 70 students from the MXAT School-Studio performing Dialogue by the New Year Tree by Yury Levitansky. This tribute honoured the late Igor Zolotovitsky, a respected figure in the theatre community.

Khabensky then presented the special 'Pass' award to the School-Studio's top student, created in memory of Zolotovitsky. Later, he awarded Oleg Kudryashov, a director, teacher, and GITIS professor, with the MXAT Prize in the 'No Comment' category. Kudryashov was recognised for his long-standing contributions to theatre and his mentorship of modern film stars.

In the 'Theatre' category, Sergei Volkov received the award for his production of The Idiot. The event underscored the importance of guidance in the arts, with Khabensky's new leadership at the School-Studio marking a fresh chapter for the institution.

The MXAT Prize, now in its first year, continues the theatre's tradition of fostering talent across multiple artistic fields. The ceremony highlighted both established names and rising stars, reinforcing the theatre's role in shaping the next generation of performers. The awards ceremony closed with a renewed emphasis on mentorship and artistic development. Khabensky's dual role as MXAT director and School-Studio head signals a continued commitment to education within the theatre. The MXAT Prize will return next year, maintaining its mission to celebrate excellence in the performing arts.
