In a significant development, Ukraine and Russia have concluded a prisoner exchange, marking the only tangible outcome from their first direct talks in three years held in Istanbul on May 16. Initially, both sides exchanged 390 prisoners each on Friday, and over the weekend, they released 307 prisoners each. The liberated Ukrainians were visibly emotional as they were reunited with their families.

Despite the prisoner exchange, Russia continued its relentless assault on Ukraine over the weekend. According to the Ukrainian air force, Russian forces targeted several regions overnight on Sunday using a total of 69 missiles and 298 combat drones. The air defense managed to intercept 45 missiles and 266 drones. Ukrainian police reported four deaths and 23 injuries in the Kyiv region, while rescue services in Shytomyr confirmed the deaths of three minors aged eight, twelve, and seventeen, and ten other injuries. Attacks were also reported in the regions of Chmelnytskyi, Kherson, and Mykolaiv.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the need for increased pressure on the Kremlin to halt the brutality. He urged the U.S. and European allies to exhibit stronger resolve to persuade Russian President Vladimir Putin to cease hostilities. The EU's foreign policy chief Kallas also called for intensified international pressure on Russia.

Overnight on Saturday, Ukraine reported massive Russian air attacks, particularly on Kyiv, involving a total of 250 drones and 14 ballistic missiles. At least 15 civilians, including two minors, were injured in Kyiv alone. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported intercepting a dozen Ukrainian drones over the Russian capital, resulting in temporary airport suspensions.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine, ongoing since 2014, intensified in February 2022. Russia's ongoing military strategy includes targeting urban areas with drones and missiles, often causing civilian casualties. The distress and harmful impact on infrastructure and the psychological wellbeing of residents continue.

Diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict are ongoing, with recent prisoner swaps marking some progress in negotiations. Ukraine is persistently advocating for stronger sanctions from its allies to put pressure on Russia. However, the conflict remains unresolved, with Kyiv and surrounding regions persistently under threat from Russian military actions.

  1. The prisoner exchange between Ukraine and Russia, which took place after the first direct talks in three years held in Istanbul on May 16, has been the only tangible outcome in the war-and-conflicts between the two countries since 2014.
  2. Despite the prisoner exchange, the politics of the ongoing conflict reveal a continuation of Russia's relentless attacks on Ukraine, with the Ukrainian air force reporting frequent assaults from Russian forces using drones and missiles, an issue highlighted by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as he calls for increased pressure on Russia.
  3. The general-news concerning the conflict and crime-and-justice issues indicate a growing urgency for foreign intervention, as Ukraine persistently advocates for stronger sanctions from its allies, particularly the EU and the US, to put pressure on Russia, while also dealing with the ongoing accidents resulting from these military actions.
