Moscow and Kiev conduct prisoner swaps and airstrikes exchange
In the latest chapter of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, a significant prisoner exchange has taken place. This long-awaited swap, agreed upon during direct talks in Istanbul earlier this month, is unfolding in stages over several days.
The prisoners exchanged in the initial round were primarily young soldiers and the gravely wounded, with a focus on those below 25 years old. Although exact numbers haven't been officially disclosed yet, reports suggest that the process is ongoing and involves multiple rounds.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the return of these soldiers via his X platform, emphasizing the challenges encountered during the exchange process. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defense in Moscow confirmed the exchange but did not specify the number of prisoners handed over to Ukraine.
Among the returned soldiers, young defenders from various military branches—Navy, Ground Forces, Air Force, National Guard, Border Guard Service, Territorial Defense, and State Special Transport Service—were reported. Notably, defenders of Mariupol, who had spent over three years in captivity, were included in this group.
The exchange was designed with a focus on the most vulnerable, giving priority to wounded, severely wounded, and young soldiers. The Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War confirmed that all soldiers returned in this stage are enlisted and non-commissioned personnel.
To ensure compliance with the Geneva Convention, Ukraine’s Human Rights Ombudsman monitored the exchange on the ground. Efforts were also made to help freed Ukrainians contact their families.
Since the conflict began in March 2022, Ukraine has brought home over 5,000 prisoners through exchanges, but the latest figures for this specific multi-stage swap have not yet been published. Ukraine continues to advocate for an "all-for-all" exchange, which Russia has yet to agree to.
While this humanitarian event unfolds, the war continues to intensify, with both sides escalating their usage of drone warfare and air attacks. Poland, for instance, has been put on alert due to the increased Russian air attacks on Ukraine, activating combat aircraft to monitor the situation in the immediate border area.
