Ruptured Peace: Putin's Truce - Kyiv and Moscow Clash Over Violations
- *
Ceasefire Broken: Regret for Numerous Violations in Putin's Plan by Kyiv and Moscow - Moscow and Kiev bemoan numerous breaches in Putin's truce
Russia's commitment to the ceasefire it announced in its confrontation with Ukraine appears questionable, as per reports from Kyiv. As stated by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrij Sybiha on the X platform, "Our military data points to Russian forces persistently launching attacks along the entire front line." In total, the Russian military has allegedly breached the ceasefire over 700 times since midnight.
Yet, the Defense Minister in Moscow asserts that the Russian army is maintaining a strict adherence to the three-day ceasefire mandated by President Vladimir Putin, responding only to Ukrainian assaults. Putin's foreign policy advisor, Yuri Ushakov, suggests that the observance of the ceasefire hinges on the evolution of the conflict, confirming that negotiations with the US to resolve the issue are ongoing – sometimes even daily.
A Tacit Truce in Kyiv
The Ministry of Defense in Moscow also reports a failed Ukrainian incursion in the Russian region of Kursk. By mid-afternoon, the Russian military had documented 488 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire.
Leadership in Kyiv has yet to publicly acknowledge the ceasefire, but reports surface that Ukrainian troops have received a ceasefire directive from Kyiv. Opposition MP Oleksiy Honcharenko posted on Telegram that although some confusing statements have emerged, Ukraine remains covertly observing the three-day truce.
The claims of both factions remain unverifiable independently. Ukraine has been combating relentless Russian intrusion for over three years.
Ceasefire Duration - A Symphony of Symbolism
The ceasefire, effective from the stroke of midnight on Thursday, is set to last for 72 hours, concluding on Saturday. This period coincides with Russia's celebration of its triumph over Nazi Germany and the end of World War II, traditionally marked by military parades on Red Square in Moscow. The grand display is more than just a commemoration; it serves as Moscow's bold demonstration of power, making May 9 a crucial day in Russia's calendar.
Ukraine Pursues a Prolonged Truce for Diplomatic Talks
Ukraine has repeatedly advocated for a 30-day ceasefire as a precursor to peace negotiations in meetings with Western security advisors. Kyiv's top staffer, Andriy Yermak, wrote on Telegram, "We have emphasized: A full and unconditional ceasefire must mark the first step towards a fair and lasting peace." The truce declared by Moscow is viewed as mere "manipulation," designed to ensure military parade security in Moscow.
Discussions with US special envoy Steve Witkoff, Keith Kellogg (advisor to the French President), British National Security Advisor Jonathan Powell, and Günter Sautter (advisor to the new Chancellor) were also attended by Ukraine's Defense Minister Rustem Ummerov and Foreign Minister Andrij Sybiha. According to Jermak, potential repercussions were discussed if Russia declined a ceasefire. A 30-day ceasefire would serve as a demonstration of Moscow's goodwill. "If Moscow truly seeks peace, it's high time for action," Jermak explained. In the event of escalation, a response would be necessary.
