More than one hundred fatalities reported in Gaza within a 24-hour period, as announced by officials, making it the bloodiest day of the past week

The humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip continues to escalate, with the United Nations (UN) declaring a famine in the Gaza Governorate as of August 22, 2025. This catastrophic situation affects approximately 2.1 million people who are facing extreme hunger.
According to reports from the Gaza health ministry, more than 61,700 Palestinians have died and about 154,500 have been injured since October 2023. Children, pregnant women, and the elderly have been severely impacted by malnutrition and violence.
The medical system in Gaza is struggling to cope with the mass casualties and severe malnutrition cases. The Palestine Red Crescent Society has treated over 3,400 weapon-wounded patients since May 2025 alone, surpassing the previous year's total.
Humanitarian aid distribution remains limited and inconsistent. The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has not been allowed to bring in any aid—including medicines and medical supplies—since March 2025. Though food and aid supplies have slightly increased since July, they remain insufficient given the scale of need. About 98% of cropland in Gaza has been damaged or made inaccessible, nearly destroying local food production.
Large-scale displacement affects about 86% of Gaza, forcing people into unsafe and overcrowded shelters and open areas. This exposes them to deadly strikes and mass casualties. The UN Secretary-General has condemned the crisis as a "man-made disaster" and emphasized Israel’s legal obligations to ensure food and medical supplies for Gaza's population as the occupying power.
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has suggested that Palestinians should leave Gaza, an idea also supported by US President Donald Trump. However, Netanyahu has stated that no forced displacement is planned. Hamas, the de facto authority in Gaza, is open to ideas for relinquishing governance in Gaza and conceding its weapons, as long as Israel ends the war and withdraws from Gaza.
In recent days, more than 100 people have been killed in Gaza, according to officials. Al-Ahli hospital reported 12 people were killed in an airstrike on a house in Zeitoun, and nine people seeking aid were killed in two separate incidents in central Gaza due to Israeli gunfire. Israeli tanks have also destroyed several homes in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis, according to Palestinian medics.
Eastern areas of Gaza City have been heavily bombed by Israeli planes and tanks, according to residents. A Hamas official stated that laying down arms before the occupation is dismissed as impossible.
Hamas held further talks with Egyptian mediators in Cairo, focusing on stopping the war, delivering aid, and "enduring the suffering of our people in Gaza." World leaders have rejected the idea of displacing the Gaza population. The malnutrition and hunger death figures have been reported by the Hamas-run ministry and have been disputed by Israel.
Britain and 26 partners have urged urgent action to halt and reverse starvation in Gaza, warning that famine is unfolding in the enclave. The statement was signed by the foreign ministers of Australia, Belgium, Canada, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Japan, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK.
