Pakistan experiences heavy monsoon rains, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries

Pakistan has been hit by severe monsoon rains, leading to 19 deaths and over 90 injuries in northeastern and southwestern regions of the country. The provinces worst affected are Punjab and Khyber Phaktunkhwa (KP), where the rainstorms were accompanied by strong winds and lightning, causing floods and extensive damage.

As reported by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), all 19 fatalities were recorded in Punjab. Most of the deaths were reported in Lahore, Jehlum, Sialkot, and Muzaffaragarh districts. The rain and accompanying storm have also led to multiple structural collapses, closed motorways, and left many areas without power.

In KP, the rains, rainstorms, and strong winds have caused damage to infrastructure, standing crops, and other property. However, no casualties were reported in the province.

The information comes after weather authorities issued a warning about strong winds, dust storms, and the possibility of rain in parts of Punjab and KP on Friday. The heavy rainfall is a continuing concern, with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reporting that floods since June 14, 2024, have resulted in 1,481 deaths and 12,748 injuries as of May 2025.

This recent round of heavy monsoon rains, following the earlier flooding, indicates a chilling repetition of a pattern that has plagued Pakistan for the past year, with the death toll from monsoon rains having already risen to 154 over nearly six weeks in 2024.
