Brandenburg's Roads Are Seeing a Shift Towards Sustainable Mobility

If you've driven around Brandenburg lately, you might've noticed an influx of cars with a twist: electric or gas-powered engines. As of July 1, over 100,000 of these vehicles graced Brandenburg's roads, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs. That's about 6.8% of all registered cars in the state. Compare that to July 1 of last year, and you'll find a 22,084-car increase.

Philip Zeschmann, a member of Brandenburg's state parliament, was curious about those numbers. He asked the Ministry of Economic Affairs for the figures.

While petrol and diesel cars still dominate (approximately 975,000 and 401,000, respectively), the number of cars powered by natural gases dropped by 380 to around 13,500.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are gaining traction, with the Federal Office for Brandenburg listing around 23,000 purely electric cars, a 52% increase from the previous year. Hybrid cars also rose considerably, with around 63,500 made up of more than 17,500 plug-in vehicles, a 30% increase since mid-2022.

Out of Brandenburg's 2095 electric charging points, 1529 are standard charge points. Fast charging is possible at 566 points. Interestingly, 80% of electric cars are charged at home.

Hydrogen isn't playing a significant role as a car drive yet. However, in addition to the existing four hydrogen filling stations in Brandenburg, three more are in development. The ministry explains that hydrogen's low availability and limited number of filling stations make it primarily a choice for heavy-duty vehicles and rail transport.

A Dance with Electricity

The shift towards electro-mobility is on the rise, with EVs and gas-powered cars becoming increasingly common in Potsdam's traffic. Germany and the EU have been pushing for greater adoption of alternative drive systems to reduce CO2 emissions, as part of a broader movement towards sustainable Car solutions.

The federal motor vehicle authority has approved many EVs and hybrid vehicles, leading to an increase in their presence on Brandenburg's roads and registering more vehicles year after year. Philip Zeschmann emphasizes the importance of addressing climate change and promoting sustainable mobility options, such as EVs, within Brandenburg and the EU.

Clearing the Air on Charging Stations

Berlin is home to an ultra-fast charging station, located near Ostbahnhof, providing efficient service for electric vehicles that accept various payment methods. For added convenience, Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) offers 10 charging stations in the P3 car park.

Driving Change in the Electric Bus Market

Electric buses are making strides in Germany, with the bus market experiencing a growth rate of 92.1% in the first eleven months of the year. With the focus on sustainable urban mobility, opportunities for electric bus adoption and expansion in alternative fuel vehicle use continue to rise.

The current trend in Brandenburg's automotive industry is set on increasing electric and alternative fuel vehicle sales and production, aiming to expand charging infrastructure to support the growth in sustainable mobility.
