Hesse's famed spas and health resorts are on a resurgence, following a tumultuous period. With an estimated 8.5 million overnight stays in 2022, the first nine months of 2023 witnessed approximately 7.1 million bookings in health spas and resorts, and expectations are high for surpassing 9.2 million overnight stays this year. Although this figure falls slightly short of pre-pandemic levels, Almut Boller, Hessian Spas Association's Managing Director, asserts that the industry is steadfastly approaching its former glory.
Economically, the sector's gross revenue, which dwindled to €1.98 billion in 2019 and plunged further during the pandemic, is set to surpass the €2 billion mark again in 2023. This resurgence has also allowed many clinics to reclaim their previous occupancy rates. Nevertheless, as much as progress has been made, issues persist – hospitals struggling to maintain occupancy rates above 95-98% may face financial instability, Boller warned.
The escalating demand for spa retreats serves as a springboard for municipalities to experiment with innovative concepts and projects. A prime example is Bad Nauheim, where the town will officially launch the Sprudelhof Therme on Monday evening.
