Brandenburg's Worrysome Uptick in Refugee-Targeted Crimes
Brandenburg's 204 criminal acts against refugees so far this year mark a concerning 44-crime escalation compared to the previous year's first nine months, as reported by the Ministry of the Interior in Potsdam in response to Andrea Johlige (Left Party)'s parliamentary inquiries. This figure could still increase with further police reports from ongoing investigations.
The first nine months of this year saw a total of 27 assault cases against refugees, contrasting with the 24 assaults in the same timeframe in 2022. Two incidents of attacks on refugee housing occurred during the second quarter of this year, a trend unseen in the preceding two years, according to the Ministry's previous data.
While racially-motivated crimes have seen a decrease, totaling 188 incidents with predominantly right-wing motivations such as hate speech, this figure could also grow as additional reports come in. There were 59 fewer such offenses in the year's third quarter compared to the same period in 2022.
The escalating crimes against refugees in Brandenburg present a troubling picture, with two attacks specifically targeting refugee housing—a trend that didn't materialize in the previous two years.
