A new monument has been revealed along Dresden’s upcoming Caspar David Friedrich Trail. It stands at the Kügelgen House, now home to the Museum of Dresden Romanticism. The piece honours the artist and his close connections to figures like Gerhard von Kügelgen.
The trail, still under development, will eventually include 15 stops. This latest addition marks the fifth station along the route.
Caspar David Friedrich first arrived in Dresden in 1798. The city’s Old Masters Picture Gallery drew him in, shaping his early artistic years. By 1807, he had begun painting and soon became a leading figure in German Romanticism.
The monument itself offers a glimpse into Friedrich’s world. It highlights his friendships, particularly with painter Gerhard von Kügelgen, whose former home now houses the museum. While details about the sculpture’s designer remain unclear, its placement ties directly to the artist’s life in the city.
Plans for the full Caspar David Friedrich Trail are moving forward. If all goes as scheduled, the complete 15-station route will open to the public by 2029. Each stop will explore different aspects of Friedrich’s work and his influence on Romantic art.
