Montreal's MTelus stage lights up for Klô Pelgag's premiere performance
Klô Pelgag rocks Montreal's MTelus, leaving fans wanting more
On a chilly February weeknight last year, Klô Pelgag graced a select few with a surprise late-night concert at Pantoum during the Phoque OFF festival. Fast forward to this past Thursday, and the Montreal debut of this enigmatic artist packed the house at MTelus, with a diverse crowd of fans from all walks of life, including "half the Music Department of Cégep Saint-Laurent."
The energy at the sold-out show was palpable as the orchestral powerhouse led by Klô took the stage, their focus heavy on synthesizers, echoing the sound of her latest album Abracadabra. The minimalist yet vibrant setup created the perfect backdrop for Klô's captivating performance, showcasing her ability to seamlessly blend sophisticated pop, dance grooves, and intimate ballads.
As the concert began, the evening started with the instrumental Le sang des fruits rouges, followed by the powerful Pythagore. Lysandre Ménard and Virginie Reid, both musicians and vocalists, deftly handled their white rolling podium workstations, while François Zaidan, the versatile Swiss Army knife of the ensemble, masterfully switched between flute, keys, and guitar. The musicians moved around the stage, creating an ever-changing dynamic, sometimes swarming around Klô at her electric piano, other times stepping back to create a more intimate atmosphere, which she filled with emotive gestures.
Gone was the shy musician of the early days; in her place stomped a confident, charismatic Klô Pelgag, commanding the stage with an unseen enthusiasm. From the top of her staircase at the start of the concert, she donned an oversized, silvery blazer with prominent shoulders. "With time, I've become more professional; I can wear a very large blazer now," she quipped during the show.
Her accompanists were in fine form, each expertly navigating their keyboards (apart from Marc-André Pétele, of course), with Étienne Dupré gripping his bass during Libre and Coupable, both from Abracadabra. Almost the entire album was played during the show, accompanied by a generous selection from her summer 2020 release Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs.
After performing for eight or nine songs dressed in an armor-like costume, Klô found herself at her electric piano in the center of the stage for two beautiful performances: the tender "Les puits de lumière" and the introspective "Jim Morrison" (titled after the album Abracadabra). The energy picked up again for the final stretch with electro-inspired tracks such as "Deux jours et deux nuits," "Mélamine," "La maison jaune," and "Rémora," the latter three hailing from Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs.intense and emotional, this first Montreal show was too small for Klô in an MTelus venue, leaving fans eagerly anticipating her return.
