Shawn Lemon Returns to the CFL after Suspension and Reinstatement

Shawn Lemon, the Canadian Football League (CFL) player, has made a comeback to the field after a tumultuous period of suspension and reinstatement.

Lemon's journey began in April 2024 when he was suspended indefinitely for wagering on CFL games in 2021, while he was with the Calgary Stampeders. This suspension was the longest in CFL history for gambling violations. An independent arbitrator upheld the suspension after an appeal, marking a significant setback for Lemon.

However, Lemon's story takes a turn in July 2025. He was reinstated by commissioner Stewart Johnston, but not without conditions. Lemon was required to complete all mandatory league education on the CFL Match Manipulation Policy, continue participating in counseling sessions, and face a lifetime ban for any future violation of the league's match manipulation policy. Before he could return to play, he also had to serve a separate two-game suspension for violating the CFL’s drug policy due to a positive test for the banned substance Phentermine, an appetite suppressant.

Following reinstatement, Lemon became eligible to sign with any CFL team, but he could not immediately play until the two-game drug suspension was served. He made his 2025 CFL playing debut with the Montreal Alouettes in early August, after completing the suspension.

Lemon expressed gratitude to commissioner Johnston for the reinstatement and support during the process. He also expressed regret for his actions related to gambling in 2021 and hopes to earn back the support of those who do not think he should be playing football.

In a pre-game interview on the Rider Broadcast Network, Lemon will share more about his experiences and his plans for the future. He has learned a valuable lesson about the importance of understanding the details of the drug policy and is determined to adhere to the rules moving forward.
