Monthly shanty sing events kick off aboard the Tall Ship Providence, commencing this Thursday
It's Sunday, Aug. 17, 2025, and the weather today is sunny with a high near 94 degrees. Alexandria, Virginia, is buzzing with activities this weekend, from community events to film screenings and farmers markets.
On Thursday, the Tall Ship Providence will host its inaugural Shanty Sing, a new monthly community event, aboard the replica of an 18th-century Continental Navy sloop-of-war docked at the waterfront. The event, which will take place during the ship's regular season on the fourth Thursday of each month, will feature the Ship's Company Chantymen, a group specializing in traditional sea shanties and maritime music. Proceeds from the Pier Bar during the event will support the Tall Ship Providence's Field Trip Program.
On Saturday, the Four Mile Run Farmers' Market is taking place at Four Mile Run Park at 9 a.m., while the West End Farmers Market is happening at 4800 Brenman Park at 8:30 a.m. For those interested in music, the Summer Sundays Chamber Music event is happening at the Lyceum by WMPA at 3 p.m., and the 'Pinned' Indie Film Table Read is scheduled at No. 9 Lounge at Evening Star Cafe at the same time.
A Family Day with Young Historians event is taking place at an unspecified location at 2 p.m. on Saturday, offering a chance for families to learn about Alexandria's history together. For those seeking support, the Alzheimer's Association Caregiver Support Group is scheduled at Charles E. Beatley Jr. Central Library at 2 p.m. as well.
Unfortunately, Alexandria has seen some unfortunate events this week. A man died in Alexandria police custody on Saturday, Aug. 16, following an arrest for public intoxication. A man was also indicted on murder and child abuse charges in connection with an infant's death. In a separate incident, a man was indicted for dating app fraud after jumping from a King Street balcony.
In other news, bidding on an Alexandria home has been suspended, and two other properties are set to go to tax sale on Wednesday, Aug. 19. Alexandria schools have also rejected federal Title IX demands.
