Monterrey allegedly swindled Anthony Martial's transfer deal, according to Pumas, stating they had a solid agreement in place.
In a surprising turn of events, Mexican football club Pumas have missed out on the signing of French international Anthony Martial, with the striker opting to join rivals Monterrey instead.
The saga began when Pumas identified Martial as their main target to fill the '9' position, with the team entering negotiations with the forward's club to secure his signature. Eduardo Saracho, the sports director of Pumas, confirmed they had been working with Martial for weeks to reach a preliminary agreement.
Several Zoom calls were held between Pumas officials and Martial during the negotiation process. They had reached a verbal agreement with the player, with a formal acceptance, in writing, from the selling club. All that was needed to build an operation for Martial to join Pumas, as stated by Saracho.
However, the deal fell through when Pumas found out through social media that Monterrey had stolen the signing from them. The team was left furious, with officials expecting an apology from Martial and his camp for turning their back on an agreed deal.
Meanwhile, José Juan Macías was presented at his Pumas presentation, reinforcing the team alongside Martial, who ultimately ended up joining Monterrey instead. Macías, in his presentation, stated "expect zero expectations from me."
Despite the disappointment, Pumas are undeterred and will continue to strengthen their squad in the transfer window, with the focus now shifting to new targets. The Martial saga serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of football transfers and the importance of finalising deals before they slip away.
